The feature landed in force this week. Google Workspace Updates broke the news on August 13, 2026. It follows earlier teases at Cloud Next ’26 in April, where executives positioned the tool as the next step beyond static charts. No code. No formulas. Just natural language prompts in the Gemini side panel.
How Sheets Canvas Works in Practice
Users open a spreadsheet packed with data. They click the Gemini icon. Then select “Create canvas.” A prompt does the rest. “Build an interactive dashboard that helps me analyze how different cost drivers impact a quarterly budget,” one example from the official announcement reads. Another: “Create a custom tracker to visualize regional field assignments.”
Gemini generates the view on top of the existing sheet. It’s not a screenshot. It’s a read-write layer. Change a value in the canvas and the source spreadsheet reflects it immediately. Rollout began for rapid release domains on August 10. Scheduled domains follow from August 31. Everything runs in English only, on web. Usage limits apply per user. Admins enable it by default when Gemini in Sheets is active.
Analysts have watched Gemini reshape Workspace for months. Earlier updates let the model generate entire spreadsheets, clean messy data, or tackle optimization problems once reserved for specialized software.
