Reports of wild mushrooms triggering visions of miniature humans have circulated for decades. Yet only now have scientists pinned the phenomenon to one species. DNA evidence ties independent accounts from remote communities in Southwest China and the northern Philippines to Lanmaoa asiatica, a bolete mushroom long eaten as food. Eat it undercooked or raw, and many people start seeing the same thing: dozens or hundreds of tiny, lifelike figures. They march across tables. They climb walls. They swim in soup bowls.
The consistency stuns researchers. Not random distortions. Specific. Repeatable. And unrelated to the better-known psychedelics.
Colin Domnauer, a doctoral student at the University of Utah’s Natural History Museum, has spent years chasing this puzzle. In a recent interview with University of Utah, he described visiting a mushroom hot pot restaurant in Yunnan. The server set a 15-minute timer. “Don’t eat it until the timer goes off or you might see little people,” the server warned. Locals know the risk. Only Lanmaoa asiatica matched every psychoactive case. Seventeen other species in the genus showed no such link.
The geographic spread amazes. China. The Philippines. Papua New Guinea. These populations share no recent cultural overlap. “Three independent cultures reported the same hallucination,” Domnauer told the University of Utah. “It must have a shared chemical basis.” The finding rules out suggestion or folklore alone. Something in the mushroom triggers a precise response in the human visual cortex. Or beyond it.
Domnauer expanded on this in a lengthy Q&A with The Microdose. He described the hallucinations as distinct from those induced by DMT or ayahuasca, where entities often appear in other dimensions. Here the tiny people exist in the real room. They interact with furniture. They tease the observer. “The perception of little people is very reliably and repeatedly reported,” he said. “I don’t know of anything else that produces such consistent hallucinations.”
Tests on mice support the potency. Extracts from the mushroom produce hyperactivity followed by prolonged stupor. Effects in humans can last one to three days. Onset sometimes delayed 12 to 24 hours. And unlike classic “magic mushrooms,” cooking thoroughly neutralizes the risk. Restaurants in Yunnan now time their dishes carefully.
So what exactly causes it?
Not psilocybin. Genetic and chemical analysis found none of the genes or compounds associated with that serotonin 2A receptor agonist. No muscimol either, the active agent in Amanita muscaria. Lanmaoa asiatica sits evolutionarily distant from those fungi. The two lineages split roughly 150 million years ago. This bolete belongs to an entirely different branch.
That absence points to something new. Researchers have already identified 20 compounds in the mushroom. Four of them unknown to science before this work. One or more likely drives the visions. Isolating it remains the next major step. Success could open doors to understanding how the brain constructs visual perception. Or how specific hallucinations arise in psychiatric conditions.
Dennis McKenna, ethnopharmacologist and brother of the late Terence McKenna, sees broader promise. In the BBC piece he observed that identifying the compound “may help us understand where in the brain [lilliputian hallucinations] originate.” Such knowledge might inform treatments for delirium, macular degeneration, or other disorders where miniature figures appear unbidden.
Yet the mystery runs deeper. Tiny beings populate human stories across time and continents. Elves in European folklore. Pixies. Dwarves. DMT users frequently report machine elves or small playful entities, as noted in recent discussions on X. Professor David Luke at the University of Greenwich has catalogued these overlaps for years. The Lanmaoa cases stand out because they remain anchored in physical reality. The figures don’t dissolve into geometry. They don’t speak in riddles from another realm. They simply populate the kitchen table.
Giuliana Furci, founder of the Fungi Foundation, put the discovery in context. “Researchers estimate that less than 5% of the world’s fungal species have been described,” she told the BBC. “There’s still a world of discoveries to be made.”
Domnauer agrees. His lab continues comparative genomics and pharmacological assays. They aim to map the full Lanmaoa genus and test extracts in more detail. The work builds on earlier skepticism. For years scientists dismissed the stories as exaggeration or misidentification. DNA sequencing changed that. One species. One consistent effect. A new chemical waiting to be named.
