Simón Diaz, Venezuelan Singer, Dies At Age 85

After a long life, and musical career in Venezuela, renowned folk singer Simón Diaz has passed away. He was affectionately known as Uncle Simón in his homeland of Venezuela, and had released several albums during his lifetime.
He did not gain the fame that some foreigners do in the United States, but it is likely that some people in the US would still be able to recognize some of his music. He died this morning at the age of 85.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir Take Ice Dance Silver In Sochi

Tessa Virtue and dance partner Scott Moir from Canada won silver for their performance in the ice dance event in this year’s Winter Games in Sochi. In the free dance portion, they earned 114.66 points, their best for the season. American pair Meryl Davis and Charlie White scored 116.63 points. The Canadians had an overall score of 190.99, which was not enough to best the Americans, who got 195.52 and the gold. Taking the bronze are Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsapalov of Russia, who scored 183.58 overall.

The Prince of Wales showed the Saudi Royal family his dance moves when he took part in the time-honored sword dance called the “Ardah” during his three-day tour of the Middle East. Dressed in traditional Arab clothing called a “thobe”, Prince Charles enthusiastically performed the dance along with other male members of the Saudi Royals to commemorate the warrior tradition of the Shammar Tribe.

Conor Oberst Files Libel Suit After Rape Claim

Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst has filed a libel lawsuit against a woman who claimed he sexually assaulted her.
On Wednesday an attorney for the singer-songwriter filed the civil suit in a federal court in Manhattan. The suit claims that last December a woman made “despicable, false, outrageous, and defamatory statements” about Oberst.

Venezuelan Beauty Queen Killed During Protest

Venezuelan beauty queen Genesis Carmona, 22, has become one of the latest victims in the continued unrest in the troubled country. The young college student was shot in the head at a protest Tuesday and died later in the hospital.
“How long are we going to live like this? How long do we have to tolerate this pressure, with them killing us?” a relative of Carmona’s said. He asked not to be named, but added, “She only needed one more semester to graduate.”
